- Do you like group Pilates/ Barre classes ?
- Yes, it’s convenient and less commitment, and it can turn into a fun social activity as well.
Here are some tips on preventing Pilates injuries, please keep in mind to create the best experience joining group Pilates classes.
- FIND a SPOT CLOSE to INSTRUCTOR
In a group class the instructor is not able to assist and correct everyone. If you are not hiding in a corner of the room, the instructor will definitely see you and help you if it’s needed.
Especially if you are a newbie in someone’s class.
Don’t be shy, you are investing your time and money – make it worth it !
- EMBRACE LIGHTER WEIGHS

In Pilates class format we usually follow lower repetitions, but you shouldn’t emphasis on heavy weights because of it.
Focus on small, controlled movements with low weights or no hand weights at all.
If you are regular in a certain group class and can estimate class pace – go ahead, challenge yourself with heavier weights!
First timer – focus on instructions given !
- FIND YOUR TRUE CHALLENGE ZONE
“ No Limits ! “ – it’s great!
But you shouldn’t push beyond that zone or your range of motion.
Proper alignment, right body weight distribution and placement during each exercise are going to help keep you stay away from injury.
Move “ the straight arm plank “ as an example:
- if you feel discomfort in your shoulders or wrist and still keep doing it, not really understanding what’s wrong?
Modify: forearm plank – still helps you strengthen the transverse abdominal muscles, less stress on your shoulders and wrist.

Instructors are not able to give individual attention in a group class, so please follow those tips!
And remember: Group class is not a competition or show off time!
It’s time to become stronger and healthier in a pace that works right for YOU today !
