PILATES is growing to be a very popular exercise trend. It’s continuing to spread and more people are getting addicted to PILATES. Many are taking Pilates teacher training courses and becoming a Pilates Instructor.
We are, Pilates instructors, teaching on various types of Pilates apparatus:
- Reformer
- Trapeze Table/ Cadillac
- Chair
- Ladder Barrel
Each piece of equipment has its own set up requirements and safety issues.
We have to check the right resistance option for the client, the exercise sequence, and the pace of class flow in order to achieve client goals.
MAT Pilates vs EQUIPMENT Pilates:
- During the Mat group class we are cuing the movement, demonstrating some exercises and giving modifications.
- On the machine, for example Reformer, we have to educate clients how to take the right body position, spring weight and safety tips.
So how can we, teachers, keep a group classes and private session satisfactory for clients?
- PRACTICE, PRACTICE , PRACTICE
Either you are a fresh certified teacher or have been teaching for a while – Practice is essential.
Feel the movement, you should be able easily juggle with equipment set up and safety comes first.
Simple things:
- “ Head rest up or down?”
- “ How many springs to set up for footwork in a group class ? “
- “ Short or long straps? “
We should be confident in this stuff and practice is playing a role.
- KEEP CLASS PACE UNDER YOUR CONTROL

Some people just want to get on machine and move.
Several people are moving at the same time. Instructor usually just gives a verbal cue and mild tactile adjustment.
I always make sure to educate clients the safe way getting On&Off Pilates Reformer.
I will keep my instructions loud and precise, so everyone is moving on the same page.
Been teaching group classes for some time I figure out which verbal cues are easier for clients to understand and comprehend.
- MAKE TRANSITIONS SMOOTH

Teaching private sessions we usually incorporate 2 -3 machines in 1 hour sessions.
If I need to reset springs, add box, etc – I will do it while the client is breathing or taking some water.
Planning group reformer class I have to create a strong workout pace. We don’t want clients to move on & off reformer much, spring setting average so all levels feel comfortable.
Can start class supine position on Reformer: footwork, arm work, abdominal, spine articulation – it will take around 25 minutes and minimum time for spring change.
- TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

Teaching Pilates equipment we are spending a lot of time setting machines, changing springs, adjusting foot bar, and carrying boxes.
Slowly educate clients to do simple machine set up, carry heavy things themselves ( especially group classes ).
Assisting private client make sure you position yourself safely, you don’t want push through bar hit your head.
We always thinking of clients safety, but make sure you protect yourself as well!
